A fire crackles. Someone is making tea. Two friends are halfway through a board game, and in the corner a conversation about something entirely unrelated to anyone’s degree is getting louder. This is a common room, and in Cambridge it is more than a room.
You will often hear the phrase “Combination Room”. JCR means Junior Combination Room, MCR means Middle Combination Room, and SCR means Senior Combination Room. The initials can describe both a physical space and the community or representative body associated with it.
Who belongs where?
At Churchill, the JCR represents undergraduates, the MCR postgraduates, and the SCR the Fellows. Other colleges have their own names and arrangements, so this is a friendly introduction rather than a rulebook for every doorway.
JCR, MCR and SCR can mean a community as well as the room where people gather.
Where a college becomes familiar
Beyond the initials is the everyday experience of sharing a place: a chat after work, meeting people outside your subject, or simply somewhere to pause. It helps explain why a college is a community as well as a set of buildings.
